oleanders

i was already leaving while he was still talking. i refused
to be a part of this. i refused to be a part of my own
separation from that which felt as natural as sinking
my toes down into earth the same color as his eyes,
that brown that coaxes what is fertile from below
and flowers like an oleander, poisonous and enchanting.
we should be able to see pegasus and cassiopeia,
i had told him the night before. but the clouds decided
to stay that night and if this is what makes rain then
let me be drenched before i make it to the end of the
driveway. i was already leaving while he was still
talking because i didn’t want silence to be the thing
that i left behind but was guaranteed to follow me
where i walked in the ditches and left flowers with
every footstep, beautiful flowers that would kill you
if you touched them, beautiful flowers that would
kill you slowly as you held them ever so gently.
